Salomon Women’s X Ultra Prime Hiking Shoe

Since it’s clear I’m a serious hiker, I was asked to test and review these shoes by They came to me via UPS sight-unseen, which is not a way I would typically buy any shoes since I’m somewhat difficult to size. My initial reaction when I opened the box was Wow! Bright color! (I’ve worn woman’s size 10 since I was in 8th grade and always avoided drawing attention to my feet.) They are not overly bright, but I am probably overly sensitive about my shoe size. 🙂

Because of an injury I knew I wouldn’t get out hiking for a few weeks, but I did wear the shoes around the house, and found them to be tremendously comfortable. They didn’t feel like hiking shoes to me. More like a comfy pair of running shoes. They also felt sturdy and well made.

When I finally did get out hiking in these Salomon’s it was on a very rainy day after a long soggy string over very rainy days. Knowing that I was meant to put them to the test I didn’t bother packing any other hiking shoes. (Probably not the best idea since I’ve had new hiking shoes rub blisters into my feet in short order.) Sadly, when giving the laces the last little dug while lacing them up, the top eye popped off the shoe.

With no back-up shoes handy I had no choice but to put a hole through the shoe where the metal eye had been and lace through it. Worked fine, and I had no doubt that a reputable company like Salomon would make right on the shoes.

I put the shoes to the test on the Multnomah Falls Trail along the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon. Because of the frequent rains and constant moisture coming from the falls these trails, including the paved areas, can be very slick… even in some good hiking boots/shoes. These shoes handled the moisture perfectly. In addition they did quite well on the more rocky and rugged terrain, and when forced to get them wet where there was water flowing across the trail, I still found them comfortable.

All-in-all I’m very pleased with the shoes. Salomon was contacted upon my return from the trip, a return UPS label was provided immediately, and my new shoes were on their way within days. Once they arrive and I’ve had another chance to wear them I may add a bit more to this review.

I’ll close with a few images from the hike…

Salomon is a part of a larger company called Amer Group since 2005, which actually started off manufacturing tobacco. It was previously owned by Adidas and was founded some 60 years ago in France.

Let’s move on to see some of the points Salomon is making about the X Ultra

First of all, Salomon is obviously trying to push a “cool factor” with the X Ultra. The material is very durable, featuring a mesh upper with traditional lace system. Footbed offers a lot of cushioning and comfort (again, according to Salomon), so they claim your feet will feel great all hike long.

Back loop ensures easy on and off. The midsole is built with shock-absorption in mind, and the toe bumper offers additional protection. The outsole is heavily lugged, and should keep your pace steady on a wide array of terrains. The construction and the materials make this hiking shoe very flexible.
